GWA to GPA Conversion Table
This table gives a practical reference for common Philippine GWA values. It is useful for planning, but it should not replace an official transcript legend or evaluator policy.
| Philippine GWA | Approx. Percentage | US Letter Estimate | GPA Estimate | Planning Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.00 - 1.25 | 96-100% | A | 4.00 - 3.75 | Excellent standing; may align with highest honors ranges. |
| 1.26 - 1.50 | 91-95% | A- | 3.74 - 3.50 | Very competitive for applications that ask for a 4.0 estimate. |
| 1.51 - 1.75 | 88-90% | B+ | 3.49 - 3.25 | Strong college performance; often near Cum Laude references. |
| 1.76 - 2.00 | 85-87% | B | 3.24 - 3.00 | Solid academic record and often acceptable for broad eligibility checks. |
| 2.01 - 2.25 | 82-84% | B- | 2.99 - 2.70 | Good standing, but competitive programs may ask for a stronger average. |
| 2.26 - 2.50 | 79-81% | C+ | 2.69 - 2.30 | Passing to good range, depending on the institution. |
| 2.51 - 2.75 | 76-78% | C | 2.29 - 2.00 | Satisfactory range; review program-specific minimums. |
| 2.76 - 3.00 | 75% | C- | 1.99 - 1.70 | Near minimum passing range in many 5.00-scale schools. |
| 3.01 - 5.00 | Below 75% | D/F | Below 1.70 | Policies vary; check whether your school treats 4.00, INC, or 5.00 differently. |
Simple formula estimate
A quick linear estimate is:
GPA = 4 - ((GWA - 1) / 2) x 2.3
The converter uses grade bands instead of only this formula, because Philippine grades are usually interpreted through ranges such as 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, and 2.00.
When to use this page
- You already know your GWA and need a GPA estimate.
- A form asks for a 4.0 GPA but your school uses 1.00 to 5.00 GWA.
- You want to compare GWA, GPA, and percentage before asking your registrar.
- You need a planning value for internships, transfer forms, or scholarship screening.
Examples: Common GWA to GPA Values
1.50 GWA to GPA
A 1.50 GWA is commonly estimated near 3.50 to 3.70 GPA, depending on the conversion table.
1.75 GWA to GPA
A 1.75 GWA is often estimated near 3.30 GPA, commonly around a B+ equivalent.
2.00 GWA to GPA
A 2.00 GWA is often estimated near 3.00 GPA, but official tables may differ.
3.00 GPA to GWA
A 3.00 GPA often maps near a 2.00 GWA planning estimate on common reference bands.
GWA vs GPA: What Changes During Conversion?
GWA means General Weighted Average. In many Philippine colleges, the strongest grade is 1.00 and the failing end is usually 5.00. GPA means Grade Point Average. In many US-style systems, the strongest grade is 4.00 and the lowest passing or failing values move downward from there.
Because the direction is reversed, students often make mistakes when they try to type a GWA directly into a GPA field. A 1.50 GWA is not a 1.50 GPA. It is usually closer to an A- or strong GPA estimate. Likewise, a 3.00 GWA is commonly a minimum passing GWA in many Philippine systems, not a strong 3.00 GPA.
The safest workflow is to calculate your GWA first, convert it only as an estimate, then ask the institution receiving your application what conversion table it accepts. If you still need to compute your weighted average from subjects and units, start with the main GWA Calculator. If you already know your GWA but want percentage and academic standing notes, use the GWA Equivalent Calculator.
Limitations and Official Use
Why conversion tables differ
Philippine schools can define their own grade descriptions, percent equivalents, retention rules, and transcript legends. Some institutions also use a 4.0 scale directly, while others use 1.00 to 5.00 GWA. That is why one universal converter cannot be official for every school.
What to submit
For admissions or scholarships, submit the grade format requested by the receiving institution. If it asks for certified conversion, request a transcript legend, registrar certificate, or credential evaluation instead of relying only on an online estimate.
